The soybean (U.S.) or soya bean (UK) is a species of legume native to East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean which has numerous uses. The beans can be processed in a variety of ways. Common forms of soy (or soya) include soya meal, soya flour, soya milk, tofu and textured vegetable protein. Textured or texturized vegetable protein (TVP), also known as textured soy protein (TSP). Soy meat or soya meat is a meat analogue or nutritious meat extender made from soya flour, a by-product after extracting soya oil. Food value in it is equal to that of the meat and contains no fat. Well……..enough of scientific explanation for the recipe.
Now lets come to the point. This recipe is prepared from soya chunks. This recipe of mine is dedicated to all my vegetarian friends. To give them a feeling of savoring non-veg 🙂 . Soya bean chap is a good substitute for meat as its texture tastes the same as minced meat. Interestingly this dish does not have much of the“usual” spices yet is an ideal side dish for paratha, chappati (roti), tandoori naan, rumali roti, pulao and even biriyani. With so much options, try this as a special item on holidays or occasions.
- 250 g of Soya bean chunks (Boiled in water)
- 2 medium sized Potato (cleaned, skin removed and boiled)
- 4-5 tbs Chick pea flour (besan)
- 1 medium Onion grated
- 1 Tomato finely chopped
- 1 tbs Ginger -Garlic paste
- 1 Cumin seed powder
- 1 tea spoon Cinnamon powder
- 1 tea spoon Cloves powder
- 1 tea spoon Asafoetida (Hing)
- 2 tea spoon Red Chilli powder
- 2 tea spoon Turmeric powder
- 4 flakes of Garlic finely chopped
- 250 ml of Refined oil for deep frying
- Salt to taste
Squeeze as much as water from the boiled Soya bean chunks. Put them in a grinder and make a paste. Add boiled Potato to the paste. Smash the Potatoes and mix well with Soya paste. Potato will give a firm bind to it. Add chopped Garlic, Asafotida, Cumin powder, Cinnamon powder, Cloves powder and salt to taste. Mix them well. Add about 2 tbs of Chick pea flour (besan) to it. Give them a elliptical or round shape. Dust them with besan and keep aside. Heat 250 ml of oil in deep bottomed frying pan. When the oil is hot gently dip the Soya chaps for deep frying. Fry them till they are brown in color. Soya chap is ready. Lets prepare the thick gravy. Heat about 2 tbs of oil in wok. When the oil is sizzling hot add the grated Onion. chopped Tomato, Ginger-Garlic paste, Turmeric powder, Red Chilli powder and salt to taste. Cook them on low heat for 15 minutes. Add the chopped Parsley and about 1 cup of water. Let the water boil. Add the fried Soya bean Chap. Cook it on low flame for 2 minutes. Soya bean chap is ready to be served.
